Supporting sustainable urbanization - In China, the trend toward urbanization has been both remarkable and challenging. Remarkable, for the sheer speed at which it has occurred, and challenging for the many problems that are accompanying it: environmental degradation, inadequacy of municipal and social services, and increasing inequality, to name just a few.
支持可持续城镇化——在中国，城镇化取得了卓越的成就，但同时也面临着严峻的挑战。卓越的成就是指中国城镇化的速度很快，而严峻的挑战指的是城镇化过程中涌现出的问题很多，比如环境恶化、市政服务和社会服务贫乏，以及不断加剧的社会不公平现象等。
上面报道中的sustainable urbanization就是“可持续城镇化”，是一种注重长远发展的城镇化理念，指不以资源大量消耗和环境严重污染为代价的平稳发展。Sustainable这个词的意思就是“可持续的”，由这个词组成的其他固定说法还有sustainable growth（可持续增长）和sustainable pattern（可持续发展模式）等。
Asian Development Bank（亚洲开发银行）和National Development and Reform Commission（国家发改委）最近的一项研究显示，目前每年有约1500万农村人口涌入城市和集镇。照这个趋势发展，人数超过一千万的megacity behemoths（超大城市）以后会越来越多，这些城市在未来五到十年内如何发展将会对以下问题的解决产生长远的影响：land management（土地管理）, 自然资源消耗、交通、能源需求、污染、greenhouse gas emissions（温室气体排放）、以及urban livability（城市宜居性）等。
