英语教学之思考:面对翻译的呼唤(2)

又如,可以视情况以典型的例子来说明,英译汉的过程常常需要大幅度地打乱原句或颠倒原句序,重新安排各个成分,以使译出的句子通顺达意。

原文: Across the country, authorities stepped up surveillance against the disease, which is highly contagious, before a week-long holiday starting on May 1 when millions of people are expected to take to the air, railways and roads.

译文: “五一”长假即将来临,数百万人到时要乘飞机、火车或经公路交通外出。为此,政府在全国范围加强了对这一高度传染性疾病的监控。

再如,教师可随时从所使用的英语教材中撷取合适的篇章或句段来说明,英语词语的翻译远非是一件机械对应的事儿,而是要“根据靠近它们的另一些词的着重点而不断变化意义的:或就近转意,或变换形态,或增减分量”。以某大学英语教材综合教程第一册第一单元中选取的一段课文为例。

原文: He (Mr. Fleagle) was said to be very formal, rigid and hopelessly out of date. To me he looked to be sixty or seventy and excessively prim. He wore primly severe eyeglasses, his wavy hair was primly cut and primly combed. He wore prim suits with neckties set primly against the collar buttons of his white shirts. He had a primly pointed jaw, a primly straight nose, and a prim manner of speaking that was so correct, so gentlemanly ,that he seemed a comic antique.

译文: 据说弗利格尔先生为人很拘谨、固执僵化,这一辈子也赶不上时代。在我眼里他好像已到了六七十岁的年纪,且极度地古板。他戴一付过时的旧式眼镜,一头卷发剪理得一丝不苟。他西装笔挺,领带打结不偏不倚对准白衬衣领头纽扣。他的颚骨轮廓鲜明,鼻梁挺直,讲起话来一本正经,字斟句酌,颇状绅士派头,活像一件古董,令人发笑!

总之,面对国家对各类翻译人才的巨量需求,探索一条能将“教学翻译”与“翻译教学”两者结合起来的新路子,对广大英语教师而言是一项很值得去尝试的工作。它对于推进新时期英语教学的综合改革也应有一定的理论意义与实践意义,对于英语教材的鼎新也会产生积极的影响,同时它也一定会在某种程度上激发学生学习英语、提高英语水平的积极性。如果我们的翻译课教师在这个基础上又能进一步思考、研究翻译教学及与之相关的翻译问题,并就此撰文立说,不仅有助于提升自己的学术水准,而且会对提高目前翻译课程的教学质量带来长久的益处。因为一个在翻译问题上视野宽广、理论功底扎实、又勤奋耕耘的英语老师必然会在课堂上展现其魅力,让学生学语言、学翻译都能充满兴趣,进而乐此而不疲。
