表示原级的比较，即as…as，一般也不难译：John runs as fast as Tom。“约翰跑得和汤姆(跑得)一样快。”但要注意这样的习惯用法：John runs as fast as anybody in his class.这一句如果译为“约翰跑得和班上任何人一样快”这就错了。as…as anybody有点相当于最高级的含义，正确译法是：“约翰是班上跑得最快的。”再看这一句：There were many Americans who were as disgusted as anybody by the activities of their government. 同样，如将这一句译成“许多美国人和任何人一样对本国政府的活动感到厌恶”会令人费解，应译作“许多美国人对他们本国政府的所作所为感到深恶痛绝。”
本文开头的第2句当然不能译成“约翰比教师更诗人”，这已经不是真正的比较，因为teacher和poet是不同的概念，无法相比。这种用法表示一种对比的概念。这一句的正确译法应是：“与其说是约翰是个诗人，还不如说他是个教师”，言外之意“约翰教书很在行，是个称职的教师，但写诗还差一些，算不上真正的诗人”。下面几句都是这中表示对比关系的：
