  正像拥有钢琴并不能使你成为钢琴家,有孩子不见得会使你成为好家长。

  表示原级的比较,即as…as,一般也不难译:John runs as fast as Tom。“约翰跑得和汤姆(跑得)一样快。”但要注意这样的习惯用法:John runs as fast as anybody in his class.这一句如果译为“约翰跑得和班上任何人一样快”这就错了。as…as anybody有点相当于最高级的含义,正确译法是:“约翰是班上跑得最快的。”再看这一句:There were many Americans who were as disgusted as anybody by the activities of their government. 同样,如将这一句译成“许多美国人和任何人一样对本国政府的活动感到厌恶”会令人费解,应译作“许多美国人对他们本国政府的所作所为感到深恶痛绝。”

  本文开头的第2句当然不能译成“约翰比教师更诗人”,这已经不是真正的比较,因为teacher和poet是不同的概念,无法相比。这种用法表示一种对比的概念。这一句的正确译法应是:“与其说是约翰是个诗人,还不如说他是个教师”,言外之意“约翰教书很在行,是个称职的教师,但写诗还差一些,算不上真正的诗人”。下面几句都是这中表示对比关系的:

  这人已是半死不活。

  虽然是活人,但看上去更像死人。

  7. The difference is more apparent than real.

  区别只是表面上的,实际上没什么不一样。

  8. Comparison, more than reality, make men happy or wretched.

  使人感到幸福与不幸的与其说是现实,还不如说是比较。

  9. My upbringing had been more that of a wild boy than that of a young lady.

  我小时候受的教育不像个大家闺秀,倒像个野孩子。

  10. He did not do very well in the test, but he got the job more by luck than management.

  他考得不太好却得到了那个职务,要说他本事大,倒不如说他运气好。

  这种用法也可以表示一种比喻,如:
